Many people think church is the only place to worship God. But you can worship God no matter where you are or what you’re doing. A soccer field is one of my favorite places to worship. Before the national anthem, I pray my performance will bring glory to God. Then the field becomes my church, and playing to the best of my ability, a form of praise.

I haven’t always regarded soccer this way. During my freshman year in college, I took my abilities for granted, showing up for games and practices totally unprepared. I was in such poor shape that a walkon senior actually started over me. That was hard to take, because I really wanted to go out there and help my team. When I called on God for help, James 1:4 came to mind:

Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Immediately, I realized my struggles weren’t due to lack of ability but lack of maturity. God had given me a tremendous gift, but I was squandering it, because I wasn’t willing to develop it. That’s when I began to see the connection between playing soccer and worshiping God. For me, they were one and the same. Anything you do can become an act of worship. It all depends on why you do it. Are you doing it for you or for God? Nothing makes God happier than people praising Him through the activities He has gifted them to do.
